Since the launch of the iPod in 2001, it would seem that everything Apple has touched has turned to gold.  They have conquered the world of desktop and laptop computers, media players, smartphones and tablets, and, if rumours are to be believed, they could soon be about to enter the lucrative LCD TV market. Reports are suggesting that Apple could launch an Internet-connected ˜Smart TV™ by the end of the year.

Ticonderoga Securities analyst Brian White has said that signs are pointing towards an Apple move into the LCD TV market.  Speaking at the recent China Electronics Trade Show, White said, œOur research suggests this Smart TV would go well beyond the miniature $99 second-generation Apple TV that the company released last fall and provide a full-blown TV product for consumers.

Apple watchers have long predicted an Apple move into the HDTV market, given Apple’s great deal of experience with high definition displays for their iMac computers.  However, these latest rumours could show that their plans are moving at a much faster pace than anyone could have expected.  White went on to say, “The combination of Apple’s powerful ecosystem, industrial design savvy, powerful brand and ability to reinvent product categories could make Apple a powerful force in the TV world over the next few years.”

Technology analyst Gene Munster, of Piper Jaffray, has repeatedly forecast that Apple would move into the HDTV market, suggesting that they could introduce a model with a starting price of around $2000 (GBP 1300).  If such a product were to be introduced, it could be paired with a subscription to iTunes, allowing users to access and download content without the need for a satellite or cable subscription or a DVR, pushing Apple further towards dominance of the technological world.
